Aluminum Recycling in Ukraine: Sustainable Development Cases from UkrAluminium Members

29.04.2025

Sustainable development and environmental responsibility are becoming defining factors for industrial manufacturers. The UkrAluminium Association actively promotes aluminum recycling as a strategic priority.

This material will be useful for: environmental consultants, ESG managers, production executives, government agencies, and students of industry-related universities.

Environmental Initiatives in the Aluminum Industry: A New Industrial Norm

Waste management and carbon footprint reduction have become key challenges for manufacturing enterprises. Aluminum is one of the few metals that retains its properties through multiple recycling cycles, making it ideal for a circular economy. In this context, member companies of UkrAluminium are actively implementing projects focused on material reuse, energy efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact.

Current Status of Aluminum Recycling in Ukraine

Despite the difficult conditions of martial law, Ukraine’s aluminum recycling sector remains resilient. According to the Association’s analytical center, over 40% of aluminum consumed in Ukraine in 2023 came from secondary processing. The primary sources of recycled material include aluminum sheet offcuts, used packaging, foil, and manufacturing waste.

Key Case Studies from Association Members

1. Studiopak Ukraine Ltd. – Closed-Loop Foil Recycling
The company implemented an internal system for collecting and reusing foil offcuts. Thanks to upgraded pressing equipment and plasma cleaning technology, over 92% of production waste is reintegrated into the manufacturing cycle.

2. Alumtech LLC – Energy Recovery and Material Sorting
At its facility in the Kyiv region, the company launched a heat recovery project for aluminum scrap melting furnaces. This has resulted in a 17% reduction in gas consumption and a 12% decrease in CO₂ emissions compared to 2021 levels.

3. Collective Foil Collection Program in the HoReCa Sector
In partnership with a network of restaurants and hotels, Association members organized the collection of used aluminum foil. As a result, more than 80 tons of foil waste were directed for recycling since the beginning of 2023.

Benefits of a Sustainable Approach in the Industry

  • Reduction in production costs through lower consumption of primary raw materials;

  • Improved environmental reputation in international markets;

  • Access to green financing and preferential loans from international donors;

  • Preparation for compliance with the EU Green Deal and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Outlook and Challenges

Demand for recycled aluminum in the EU and the Baltic states continues to grow. Ukrainian companies are already integrating relevant practices, but scaling up requires government support in the form of:

  • Incentives for aluminum waste sorting at the municipal level;

  • VAT exemption for secondary raw material transactions;

  • Expansion of state grant programs for production modernization.

Conclusions

Sustainability is no longer an option—it’s a necessity for industry survival. UkrAluminium members are proving that aluminum recycling in Ukraine is not just a theory but a real practice that reduces costs, protects the environment, and meets European standards. The next step is broader industry participation and support at the national policy level.
